Selfless giving: The 2019 PSALM-CSR Blood-Letting Activity

In donating blood, one gives a part of himself without asking for anything in return. This was the compelling reason PSALM employees donated blood during the annual Blood-Letting Activity on 20 February 2019 at Vertis North Corporate Center I, Quezon City. PSALM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Group, in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), successfully held the activity with a total of 25 packs of blood collected from employee-donors.

This annual blood-letting activity has always drawn strong support from employees since it started ten years ago. Most of the donors were driven by the altruistic motive of helping those badly needing blood. Some cited getting health benefits from the activity. “I donated blood to replenish my body with new blood cells. I also get to burn 650 calories just by giving blood,” Carmelyn Beronilla of Asset Valuation and Disposal Department (AVDD) 2 said.

Donating blood is not for everyone, though. When the blood-letting started at 10 AM, 35 employees expressed their readiness to donate blood. Later, ten were deferred after screening tests deemed them unfit to donate that day. Reasons for the deferral include having a high blood pressure, open wounds, lack of sleep, among others. A PRC staff explained that they may donate later once the tests have cleared them of any deficiency.

In support of the PRC’s blood donor program, qualified PSALM employees are encouraged to donate blood regularly. They can conveniently proceed to PRC’s Quezon City chapter located at the City Hall Compound, Kalayaan Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City.
