Inspiring to Give Back: The 2017-2018 Computer Transfers

The PSALM Corporate Social Responsibility-Gender and Development (CSR-GAD) Focal Point Group continues to inspire among its volunteers the value of giving back through the 2017 and 2018 Computer Transfers. From 2017 to 2018, CSR-GAD distributed a total of 86 sets of computers to public schools in dire need of learning tools for its students.

For 2018, in just a span of five months (February to June 2018), CSR-GAD led 28 PSALM personnel in distributing computer sets to public elementary schools of Luzon and Visayas.

Some of the volunteers are alumni of the recipient schools. They had gone through the hurdles of having no computers to aid learning in their grade school years and this made their strong resolve to recommend their hometown’s schools as recipients of PSALM’s computer transfers. The computer transfer in San Fernando Central School in Ticao, Masbate became a trip down memory lane for one of the volunteers who is an alumna of the school. Sofe Soteraña vividly recalled her happy and carefree days playing “shatung” and “tumbang-preso” with schoolmates. Coming from a family of educators, the former Girl Scout can relate how the scarcity of learning tools in public schools can impede the academic progress of students. Another case in point is Sogod Elementary School in the Municipality of Bacacay, Albay. Because the coastal municipality is frequented by typhoons throughout the year, a big portion of the local budget is allotted for the repair of run-down school buildings and wobbly fixtures in classrooms. Moved by the sorry condition of the school, Nancy Nuyles and her husband Doods led volunteers in distributing computers to the school on 20 June 2018. According to Doods, a product of the school, not a single computer is available for use by 262 students. “Grades 4 to 6 have computer subjects integrated in their curriculum, but teachers can only show pictures to illustrate how a computer works,” he said.

The Computer Transfer is a yearly CSR activity which all PSALM units participate in. This year’s is a continuation of the computer transfers originally scheduled in 2017. Other localities which received computers from PSALM, through CSR-GAD, this year are the following:

              Bangkal Elementary School, Malolos, Bulacan

              Tabang Elementary School, Guiguinto, Bulacan

CSR-GAD is proud of all 2017 and 2018 volunteers who went to distant shores to accomplish the noble mission of the Computer Transfers. These volunteers are the embodiment of British statesman Winston Churchill’s popular saying, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
