Makasiar not a PSALM consultant; A Letter to The Daily Tribune publisher Ninez Cacho-Olivares

03 Aug 2006

We have noted with both amusement and annoyance the constant reference of Mr. Gerry Baldo, one of your reporters, to Mr. Garry Makasiar as a consultant of the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM).

We grinned and bore it when Mr. Baldo mentioned Mr. Makasiar as a PSALM consultant in his first story entitled "Congress summons PSALM, private execs over Masinloc" that was published on 24 July. But when he did it again in his 31 July article entitled "GMA told to junk Masinloc power deal," we thought it was no longer funny. Apparently, Mr. Baldo does not bother to check and recheck his information - a cardinal rule in journalism.

Lest the readers of your respected newspaper be misled, we would like to clarify that Mr. Garry Makasiar is not, and has never been in anyway, connected with or involved in the privatization efforts of PSALM.

In the spirit of accuracy and fair play, we earnestly hope that this will be clarified to the public and not be written as fact in your paper in the future.

Thank you very much.
