Bidding Of Decommissioned Bataan Thermal Set

15 Mar 2005

The Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) today announced the formal sale of the 225 megawatt (MW) Bataan Thermal Power Plant.

The oil-fired Bataan Thermal is located in the town of Limay in the Bataan province.

Bataan Thermal is composed of two of generating plants which came into operation in the 1980’s. Bataan I became operational in 1972 with a generating capacity of up to 75 MW. In 1977, an additional output of 150 MW was completed with the commissioning of Unit II of the Bataan Thermal Plant.

Situated 139 kilometres west of Metro Manila, the existing substation within its premises connects Bataan Thermal to the Luzon Grid. The plant successfully operated as the base-load generator for the same grid until the year 2000 with the closure of Unit I in January, following the decommissioning of Unit II in January of 1999.

The Bataan Thermal is the third of a series of decommissioned power plants that PSALM has scheduled for bidding this year.

Previously, PSALM announced the bidding of the 200 MW Manila Thermal and the 54 MW Cebu II Power Plant.

PSALM has two other decommissioned plants set for auction. Immediately following the sale of Bataan Thermal, PSALM is expected to bid out the 22.3 MW General Santos plant and the 104 MW Aplaya plant—in April and May, respectively.
