PSALM GAD-FPS disseminates reproductive health information through seminars in tandem with Quezon City Health Department
In observance of Safe Motherhood Week, the PSALM Gender and Development Focal Point System (GAD-FPS) held two seminars to inform PSALM employees on the significance of access to reproductive health care and making informed decisions regarding family planning, including protection against sexually transmitted infections.
GAD-FPS invited Ms. Jonnalyn Garcia RN, Population Program Officer I of Quezon City Health Department, to lecture on reproductive health concepts and the advantages of using certain family planning methods –all of which require focused and open discussion.
On Day 1 (14 May 2025), Ms. Jonnalyn discussed the provisions of Republic Act No. 10354 or the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012. Her lecture revealed that in this day and age, Filipino women still encounter difficulties in obtaining family planning methods. Wrong or unfounded beliefs remain widespread on specific birth control methods such as pills and intra-uterine device, commonly known as IUD, which impede the successful implementation of R.A. No. 10354 in communities throughout the country.
On Day 2 (15 May 2025), employees were oriented on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – Infection, Transmission, Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, with men as the viral carriers. Infection can cause genital warts or some types of cancer, such as cervical cancer. Direct contact with infected skin or mucous membranes, usually during vaginal/anal/oral sexual contact, is how the virus is transmitted. Women are advised to get regular Pap tests. In some cases, HPV testing is required to detect abnormal cell growth which could lead to cervical cancer.
The GAD-FPS remains a staunch advocate for good reproductive health not only to PSALM’s corporate employees but to Filipinos from all walks of life.
